Sarah Kirk Hanley, AAA, is an independent critic, curator, advisor, and expert appraiser for fine art prints, editions, and illustrated artists’ books. Hanley has fifteen years of experience as an appraiser. She is a consulting expert for Winston Art Group and Art Peritus Advisors and Appraisers, New York; and Freeman's/Hindman Auctioneers & Appraisers. She is also a member of the board of directors for The Atelier 17 Project, which encourages new research about this avant-garde printmaking workshop upon its 2027 centennial, an adjunct instructor at SUNY Purchase in the history of art, and a frequent guest speaker at Sotheby's Institute of Art. From 2009-19, she was a consultant for Auctionata and 1stdibs, and wrote extensively for the nonprofit publications Art21 Magazine and Art in Print. Hanley served as Assistant Vice President of Christie’s Print Department from 2006-09 and was involved in coordinating sales, managing consignments, producing sales catalogues and preparing appraisals for distinguished clients. Prior to her auction experience, Hanley was Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at the Milwaukee Art Museum, where she organized and contributed to several exhibitions and publications. She holds an MA in Museum Education from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, and a BFA in Printmaking and Fine Art from the University of Iowa, magna cum laude. Hanley is a member of the Appraisers Association of America, ArtTable, the Association of Print Scholars, and Phi Beta Kappa.
